Gallery in Los Altos has added a new local artist to their gallery with roots
in early California Impressionism. Ed
Terpening creates expressive, colorful local land and seascapes in “plein air”
(in the open air) using techniques used by early turn of the century artists
such as William Wendt, Edgar Payne, and Marion Wachtel. His expressive color
and brushwork is the result of his admiration and study of Russian
Impressionists, such as Sergi Bongart.
Ed favors painting outdoors due to the direct connection with the subject
in natural light. Painting quickly in
such a way results in the fresh, spontaneous, and light-filled character of his
work.
He
also draws on his diverse life experience.
Before becoming an artist (just 4 years ago), he’d worked as a teacher,
musician, software engineer, and high tech executive at such noteworthy valley
firms as Apple Computer and Cisco Systems.
In particular, he describes his past musical career: “The best music
leads the listener through a path of emotions through theme and variation,
dynamics, and a well designed structure.
My pieces use design, color and line to lead the viewer through a path
as well, and each piece is designed to communicate a specific mood. In particular, I like my pieces to have a
flow and energy that denotes the rhythms of the mood I’m trying to create”.
Ed
is part of a recent resurgence in plein air painting in the United States. Following the abstract movements of the 50’s
and beyond, there is renewed interest in the creation of art from direct observation
outdoors. He is a co-founder of the
Verde Artist Guild, a group of almost 50 plein-air painters that meet regularly
to paint together and share their work throughout the Bay Area.
