Just back from Lake Alta (in the Sierras). I painted this week with my good friend Andy Skaff along the Trukee River. I definitely went for “colorist” in this painting, as opposed to “tonalist“. I have a few more that are drying that I’ll post later. Off to Chicago tomorrow until 7/24, so probably won’t have blog updates until then.
I found your blog through another, and just wanted to drop in and say that I love your plein air work. It has a lot of energy and spontaneity – this piece really shows that. I’m a landscape painter, but don’t get out to paint as often as I should – improving my plein air skills is a big goal!
Ed, I really like this…the light on the log…and the inviting sunlit grass beyound it– great stuff. I like your composition, and the eye movement…up the path across the horizon and back down to the path.
Thanks, Rob. This painting is growing on me, thanks for your positive thoughts. I was thinking about the shadows on the ground cover, making them more verticle, to look like the ground. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll try in photoshop first to see how it looks, or follow Kevin Macpherson’s technique and paint-over while covered in celophane.
