Coachella Valley 2

Another desert painting!  I can see another trip down there in the near future, perhaps end of this month, when I have my next week off for painting.  I think the design for this one looks a little too linear.  Not sure, what do you think? Coachella Valley 2 – Oil on Linen – 12×16

Kauai Sunset

Here’s a little sunset study of a Kauain sunset. Slowly…inhale…exhale. Relax everybody! Sunset (North Shore, Kauai) – Oil on Canvas – 8×10

Dry Stream Bed, Coachella Valley

Here’s my latest painting from what is emerging as a series of desert paintings from my recent trip to the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs.  The color harmonies and geography of the area are a nice, inspiring change of pace for me. I’m very happy with this, although I wish the photo were more accurate.  … Read more

Coachella Valley Desert Studies

I’ve been having a blast painting from my studies and reference photos from the dessert. Today’s is from the Coachella Valley. I’ve painted three so far, more to be posted soon. Enjoy! Coachella Valley 1 – Oil on Canvas – 8×10

More from Indian Canyons

Here’s a post-trip painting done from a photo at Indian Canyons, a great little oasis in Palm Springs. Had fun laying on some thick paint here, playing with abstraction a bit. Here’s Indian Canyon 1, done on location. The latter is more subtle, but I also like the energy and movement of this one. Indian … Read more

The value of simplifying

I wrote last year about the importance of working in abstractions, and in looking at some of my work lately, I feel I am trying to put too much in, explaining too much. These little detail bits of paintings below I think emphasize the importance of simplifying, and the kind of dramatic results you can … Read more

Mark Kerckhoff Workshop, Day 3

While the high winds continued today in the desert, the class went on and Mark continued to help us focus on his tonal method. He starts by blocking in a single, middle value for each plane in the landscape (sky, ground, slanted, upright). Here’s a quick video that shows two of my studies today in … Read more

Mark Kerckhoff Workshop, Day 2

The “Sausage Fest” continued today (did I mention that all the students are men? I guess Mark’s warning to “watch out for rattlesnakes” scared some people off–not you, Camille! :-). High winds cut today’s painting day short, but we hung in there as long as we could. Even while sitting in the back of my … Read more

Mark Kerckhoff Workshop, Day 1

Mark Kerckhoff choose a great location for today’s first day of class, Indian Canyons. These studies were done in Palm Canyon, at the bottom of the hill from the Trading Post. Mark’s technique is interesting–very different from Camille Przewodek’s. He first draws with Indian Ink and water. You’d think such a drawing would be erased … Read more
