Estes Park Plein Air, Day 1

Well, despite the “Orange” national security threat, I arrived in Colorado in one piece yesterday. It was actually a very trouble free flight and the person who checked my ID in line had the time to wish me a happy birthday (August 20)! Ron Schlorff and Julia Seelos are set to arrive in a few … Read more

The Colorado Rockies are Calling!

I’m off the Estes Park, Colorado for their invitational plein air event, Thursday.  The park is part of the larger Rocky Mountain National Park. Ten days of painting in the rockies sounds sooo good right now.  As per a previous post, my experience at the recent Vahona Plein Air Invitational was not so optimal.  I … Read more

Why Artists Should Blog

As some of you know, in addition to my art career, I work part-time for Wells Fargo (the 4th largest bank in the US). Since I can’t support myself with art alone (I tried for 3 years and almost starved 😉 I may as well do something I enjoy. At a company the size of … Read more

Valona Plein Air – Bust!

Well, it was a bad weekend (except of course for the sales at Filoli, Ya!). I just was not thrilled to paint Crocket. I did one decent landscape of the hills outside town, but my citiscape…no bueno. I wish I could loosen up when it comes to painting architecture. I’ve seen it done well. Danny … Read more

Good News from Filoli

I received a nice email from Filoli today, two of my three paintings sold the first weekend of the show! “It was great fun because the buyer was from the San Mateo County Counsel’s Office, looking specifically for art of San Mateo County! She was thrilled with your paintings. They will be hung in their … Read more

“Joaquin Sorolla” Biography

I have just received a new book well worth checking out, “Joaquin Sorolla” by Blanca Pons-Sorolla. The book is filled with astonishing images. I’ve of course seen his work in museums before and have heard many artists I admire (including Barry John Raybold (Virtual Art Academy) and Ted Georschner) rave about his work. JARDÍN DE … Read more

University of California, Berkeley

Hey, this is cool. I got a call today from the Chancelor of the Biology School at UC Berkely asking permission to use the painting below on a poster advertising their Microbiology conference at Asilomar Conference Center. I did a series of sand dune paintings last year. Funny enough, not great sellers, although one in … Read more

Gray vs. Color, Part II

In a previous post, I lamented my struggles with color–specifically, finding a balance between grays and pure color. I received good feedback in comments (thanks Jan and Bart) and made changes to the painting (see before and after images below). The changes may appear subtle, but I think the graying down parts of the painting … Read more

Water Lillies on Lake Alta

After Monet produced his series of water lilly paintings, can anyone else take them on? It is a beautiful subject and coincidentally the “birth flower” of July. When I was at Lake Alta recently, I took a number of reference photos. I wish I’d done some onsite sketches, but the photos I took are making … Read more

Estes Park Plein Air 2006 in SWA

My painting “Last Light, Eucalyptus” was selected for the Estes Park Plein Air 2006 advertisement in Southwest Art Magazine (August, 2006 issue). I just shipped this painting to Morro Bay for the Central Coast National Exhibition, where it will be until September 17.
