No art, today: after almost 20 years together, Mike and I decided to make it official.  Surrounded by friends and family (and CBS News, yikes!) we were married in a civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, where the same-sex marriage in California began.

Ed & Mike, Wedding Day, San Francisco City Hall

I hope you’ll join us in opposing Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that would deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.  We were interviewed by CBS News after (and they filmed the ceremony), so who knows, we could become the “Joe the Plumber” of same-sex married couples!
You’ll find our online wedding album here.  Enjoy!

Update: our wedding kiss is part of this CBS Evening News segment on Proposition 8.

  1. Congratulations!
I am advocating and muttering all sorts of hocus pocus/mumbo jumbo (since I don’t really believe in “prayer” for the rejection of Prop. 8.
I wish more people felt about gay marriage the way I feel about abortion:
If you don’t want one, don’t get one.

  2. Congratulations to you both! 20 years is indeed a very long time.

(What’s with the ‘no art’? Ed – your shirt stipes look like your favourite painting colours to me!)

  3. CONGRATULATIONS…
I have many friends who have taken advantage of this wise court ruling… Hopefully our CA citizens will continue to believe in equal rights for all.
    Be well…
    Happy painting. – Marian

  4. Again, thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and congratulations. Although Proposition 8 passed in California (banning same-sex marriages), the fight will go on for equality. I just don’t get the argument that our marriage harms the “traditional family”.

By the way, chances are, our marriage will remain legal since it occurred before the ballot measure was passed, but the struggle isn’t over.

  5. Congratulations to Ed & Mike.

Thames & Hudson published a book called ‘Signifigant Others’ which is about the partnerships of famous painters, of how the partner helps the painter (& visa versa) in leading a life of creativity. I think you’d enjoy reading it.

    All the best.

  6. A hearty congratulations to both of you. You both look smashing in your wedding shirts of many colours!
I am proud to say in 2005 Canada accepted same sex marriage in all provinces in Canada, with the same rights and priviledges as other marriages & protected by our charter of human rights and freedoms. i cant imagine it being any other way now. Peace, love, respect, & harmony for all humankind is what it’s all about.
Keep up the fight. And also the nice paintings.

  7. Hello Ed,

Your out in the open wedding photos for everyone to see really surprised me, but then I thought, ‘if a guy wants to wear khaki pants to his own wedding who am I to say anything’ (I had a cast on my leg and hopped down the aisle on crutches)

Best wishes to you and Michael.

I hope your annual holiday art sale goes well. Your plein air paintings are beautiful.
