John Ebersberger Workshop Recap

I  studied with John Ebersberger this week at l’Atelier aux Couleurs: the Art Academy. John’s a great teacher, full of energy, enthusiasm, and most of all, knowledge.  He is from the “Hensche School” painting method, whose lineage goes backward from Henry Hensche (John’s teacher and Hawthorne’s assistant), to Charles Webster Hawthorne (Chase’s assistant) to William … Read more

Kauai Canyon

It’s been a while (10 days) since I’ve had a chance to update my blog.  A lot is going on!  I spent time tonight framing for my show coming up next week.  Meanwhile, I did have time to do this painting from a reference photo taken in Kauai last year.  Enjoy! AVAILABLE IN MY STORE

Rower (Stow Lake)

While looking through reference photos last night, I stopped at one that had caught my eye before.  In the distance, a rower in a small row boat on the lake.  After zooming and cropping, I found an image and design that I liked.  I’m starting to second-guess parts of this painting, now that I’ve had … Read more

This past Spring I was fortunate to study with Kevin Weckbach (I highly recommend his workshops, here are my … Read more

Just having fun

I wanted to play with abstraction and paint quality today, so I painted this from a reference photo of a beach canyon with a mixture of ice plant and sage brush.  It felt good (mentally), not to think to much and just respond.  I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, but hope to return … Read more

Pescadero Sunset

I was looking through my reference photos and came across a memorable one from Pescadero State Beach.  Before the “dot-com” money ran out, in the years I was painting full-time, I used to paint here often with early artist friends like Kim Fancher-Lordier, Ann McMillan, Julia Seelos, Cathy Boyer, Cynthia DeBenedetti , et al.   We’d … Read more

John Ebersberger is scheduled to teach at l’Atelier aux Couleurs, our local art academy (in Petaluma) July 6-10, 2009 . Painting the Sky

Painting the sky is so much fun!  There’s a natural synergy between that subject and the tools of the painter, especially the brush.  The right-shaped brush can render the sky naturally, and the fluidity of paint adds to this perfect fit between subject and materials.  They’re also among the best subjects to create compelling compositions, … Read more
